讲座摘要:At the end of 2015, the central government in China proposed the “Double first-class initiative”, aiming to develop a number of universities and disciplines into first-class educational institutions by 2050. Many highly ranked universities in China have taken the catching-up development strategy, and many faculty members face considerable research pressure alongside a lack of structural opportunities. This paper builds upon Merton’s strain theory to explore the coping behaviors of Chinese university teachers who are seeking to reconcile this goals–means gap with their research practice. Interviews with twenty university faculty members working in one of the highly ranked universities in China showed that despite variance among their patterns of adaptive responses (i.e., conformist, innovator, ritualist, retreatist, and rebelist), mianzi culture worked as the prevailing motivation behind these university teachers’ choices of coping.
