The Influence of Social Networks on Generalized Trust: Findings from the 2017 ISSP Module
内容简介
The influence of social networks on generalized trust (or trust in strangers or any persons in society at large) has long been a scholarly concern. When social networks are treated as a whole, kinds of network-mobilized resources are ignored, leading to ambiguity and uncertainty in interpretations of how social networks matter for generalized trust. Capitalizing on the 2017 ISSP module on Social Networks and Social Resources, we differentiate emotional and instrumental dimensions of social networking interactions engaged by the 2017 ISSP survey respondents (N=44,492) with kin and non-kin contacts. It is found that both emotional and instrumental dimensions of social networks increase generalized trust, but the emotional effect is stronger and twice as large as the instrumental effect. Among those who are deeply embedded in emotional networking interactions, the instrumental effect on generalized trust is negative, but among those who are deeply embedded in instrumental networking interactions, the emotional effect on generalized trust is significant and strong while the instrumental effect becomes constant. These findings point to the necessity of emotional networking interactions for developing generalized trust, and at the same time they reveal the conditionality that instrumentality must be coupled with emotionality before they can jointly produce a positive impact on generalized trust. Instrumentality alone does not do justice for generalized trust.
