Pro-environmental Behavior Patterns and Their Influencing Factors: A Cross-national Comparison between China and Europe

Anchoring at the emerging environmental challenges and sustainable actions, current research has explored national-level influencing factors behind environmental concern and pro-environmental behavior (PEB). However, these studies tend to ignore the heterogeneity across nations and culture. To address the limitations of regional comparative research, we utilize data from ISSP (IV) , which includes six European countries (Germany, Denmark, Switzerland, Hungary, Finland, and Iceland) and data from China provided by CGSS(2021) to compare the pro-environmental differences between China and Europe. Utilizing latent class analysis (LCA), we identify four PEB patterns: 'Environmentalist', 'Public-sphere environmentalist', 'Private-sphere environmentalist', and 'Just good citizen'. Our results show that the European residents are more inclined toward proactive patterns than Chinese counterparts. Furthermore, socioeconomic disparities exist in the same PEB pattern. Concerning influencing factors, environmental concern, post-materialistic values, and ecological degradation positively predict PEB among both European and Chinese residents. However, the roles these factors play in predicting PEB within the public sphere exhibit notable differences between European and Chinese residents. In light of these findings, we advocate for further studies to elucidate intricate environmental differences and the underlying mechanisms among nations, and to unite forces to protect our nature.
